Trademark Policy

Effective Date: January 01, 2025

Introduction

At The Rim Locals ("we," "our," or "us"), we recognize the importance of trademarks in protecting brand identity while respecting the rights of businesses and organizations in the Mountain Rim Communities. This Trademark Policy outlines our position regarding the use of our name, domain, and branding, as well as our stance on common geographic references and fair use of regional terms.

Our Identity

Our official name is The Rim Locals, and our primary domain is TheRimLocals.com. For convenience, we also operate under RimLocals.com. This does not signify a difference in branding or intent but is simply a practical decision for accessibility and ease of use. We have taken steps to distinguish ourselves from other websites in the region while maintaining our mission of serving the local community.

History

  • When our project launched on August 17, 2021, no similar websites or platforms existed in the region.
  • A separate website with some overlapping functionality was established on March 22, 2023 and became operational much later.
  • We are not affiliated with any similar websites in the local region.

Distinctive Branding and Differentiation

To reinforce our unique identity, we have taken deliberate steps, including:

  • Adding "The" to our name to further differentiate ourselves.
  • Using a distinct color palette: forest green, brown, and burgundy.
  • Featuring a San Bernardino Mountains representation in our logo to emphasize our local connection.

Use of Geographic Terms

The term "Rim" is widely recognized as referring to the Rim of the World area, just as "L.A." refers to Los Angeles. No entity can claim exclusive rights to such a broad and commonly used term. Similarly, "Locals" is a general descriptor of a community-based effort rather than a proprietary brand. The combination of such terms does not create exclusive rights that override fair use.

We believe that multiple organizations using "Rim" or "Locals" benefits the entire community by increasing overall visibility and engagement. If any entity perceives potential confusion, we encourage collaboration over conflict to strengthen the local economy and community ties.

Community Focus and Intent

The Rim Locals project is a learning and experience-based initiative, providing opportunities for individuals to gain real-world skills in web development, digital marketing, and community engagement. It is not structured as a corporate business but as a community-driven project led by an experienced web professional committed to enriching the local area.

Fair Use and Practical Considerations

We are well within our rights to use our legally registered domain and branding. In fact, those who might take issue with our presence should appreciate our project, as our efforts drive traffic to the entire region and increase exposure for other businesses. Domain ownership does not impose any obligation to use a domain for a particular purpose. Rather than competing, we see ourselves as an ally to the community, focused on strengthening local connections and opportunities.

We encourage any concerned parties to approach us with a spirit of cooperation, as collaboration yields better outcomes than unnecessary disputes.

Strategic Influence

As experienced web professionals, we understand digital strategy, including SEO and traffic management. We have the capability to direct online visibility in ways that benefit those who work with us—and to shift visibility elsewhere when necessary.

A Better Path Forward

We encourage cooperation over conflict. While we operate well within our legal rights, opposition could lead to unintended consequences. The internet is vast, and not all uses of a domain align with community interests. If this domain were used for something less constructive, it could negatively impact similar domains. Working together ensures a positive outcome for all involved.
